Brace for Impact
Having just finished my first year of undergrad at the University of Arkansas, I'm so much closer to studying the art I'm here to learn about. Step into the life of the first-year art major: I was lumped in with a group of about 60 others to take a full year of "foundations" studio. The first year studio is an 9-hour course, that is 8AM-5PM on Tuesdays and 8AM-6:30PM on Thursdays, with an hour break for lunch. Yes, in class for that long... They say it is to "weed out" the ones who did not take it seriously.
Alas, I made it through without having ever touched clay for the whole year. Thank goodness that all of that is out of the way now, and I'm headed full speed toward ceramic studios, and many hours learning new things at the wheel! The truth is, I've been making pottery for four years, and selling my work for a year, but I barely have my toes in the seas of this art. I'm desperate to learn the chemistry behind this craft, and to meet masters of the wheel who want to pass on their knowledge.
The point is, as I'm stepping into my first college-level ceramics classes, my work is bound for change. Learning about mixing clay, formulating my own glazes, and using a gas-reduction kiln are all going to change the way my work typically looks and functions. As I begin this journey, I will keep up with current orders as usual whenever I am home. But while I am at school Fayetteville, this is my time to explore endless new styles of form. Let the adventure begin!
